Tonga commits to women empowerment and gender equality

Tonga’s director of women’s affairs, Polotu Paunga says the island kingdom has made a lot of commitment towards women empowerment and gender equality.

Speaking from the 9th Meeting of the Commonwealth Gender Plan of Action Monitoring Group (CGPMG) in New York, she told Radio Tonga News a major outcome of the annual consultation this year was the confirmation of the Framework of Monitoring and Evaluation of the implementation of the revised1995 – 2015 Commonwealth Plan of Action on Gender and Development.

Tapa gift marks Tongan thanks

Marlborough Rural Women yesterday accepted a gift of a large tapa cloth made by women in Tonga.

Rural Women Marlborough provincial branch international officer Melva Robb said each year the group focused on a different country. Last year the theme was Tonga and Marlborough woman Theresa Veikoso spoke to the group about her Tongan homeland’s culture.

Miss Robb said that after Mrs Veikoso spoke to them the Marlborough women were inspired to help the Tongan community in some way. Mrs Veikoso suggested money they raised could go to a group making traditional tapa cloth, led by her aunt.
