Sisters of Compassion meeting in Wellington

The Sisters of Compassion  are holding their General Chapter in Wellington. 50 are attending from New Zealand, Australia, Fiji and Tonga.

The General Chapter is held every six years.  Sisters look again at the Mission of Christ entrusted to the Congregation and how this is being carried out.  In the light of the signs of the times and the resources available, future direction is set and plans are made for the next six years and beyond. A new Congregational Leader is voted for, along with a supporting team.

A particular point of interest this Chapter will be the ongoing process towards the canonisation of  the French woman who founded the Congregation of the Daughters of Our Lady of Compassion (commonly known as Sisters of Compassion), in 1883.  Suzanne Aubert has always been held in high esteem by the people of New Zealand, regardless of race or creed. Since 1988 the New Zealand Anglican Church has placed her in their Book of Common Prayer calendar as a saintly woman.

The Sisters of Compassion are the only indigenous, homegrown religious order in New Zealand. As well as in New Zealand there are communities in Australia, Fiji and Tonga.
