Religious leaders’ cheque books conspicuously closed

The people of Christchurch will need help to rebuild their heritage churches, especially since these religions are fading away. The religious leaders’ cheque books are, however, conspicuously closed.

The Pope and the Archbishop of Canterbury should be making a contribution because the Anglican and Catholic Churches are some of the wealthiest organisations in the world and if it is good enough for the world sporting bodies to come to the aid of Christchurch, then it’s good enough for the global churches.

So said Tony Doe on The Panel on Radio New Zealand National on 5 April. His host Jim Mora and fellow panelist Graham Bell appeared to agree with him.

The Pontifical Council Cor Unum in Rome is sending US$50,000 to assist the people of Christchurch. Cor Unum acts on behalf of the Pope to carry out special initiatives in the field of humanitarian actions when disasters occur.
