A secret ingredient to good communication is listening, and new media is making it much easier, so says Vatican official Msgr. Paul Tighe.
Tighe, secretary of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, said the key to using new media successfully is in “building relationships; it’s not just about transferring information.”
“Good communication begins with listening, and new technologies can let you listen if you use them right,” he said.
Tighe was one of the many participants at the council’s “Language and Communication” assembly.
It is not so much about getting information from person A to B, rather than establishing a relationship between them and understanding each other’s perspective. New technologies are not about putting old wine into new wine-skins, “it’s about creating community around that information” and devoting resources to have the right people manage the new community”.
The council is still working on a new pastoral document, updating what the church teaches about communication, which it intends to also present as a multimedia presentation.
