There is a high demand for places in faith based schools and according to one Principal the “Catholic” brand is “very hot” at the moment.”
About 66,000 pupils are in the Catholic schools, representing an increase of a quarter since 1996.
Sacred Heart College Auckland has a waiting list of 500 and is “inundated every day” with interest from prospective parents, said headmaster Jim Dale. He said parents didn’t mind the $3000 annual donation because the school had a good reputation for academic success and a “holistic” values-based education.The “Catholic brand is very hot and very high.Chief executive of the Association of Integrated Schools, Pat Lynch, said there were several reasons for increased interest in faith based schools including:
- More non-religious parents wanting their children to have a values-based education
- A large increase in birth rates
- The arrival of more migrants with religious roots
- The academic record of integrated schools
